Global Food Shortage and Impact of Pests on Harvest and Food Reserves.

These numbers are worrying and have the potential to disrupt numerous food reserves in the world, leading to a food shortage. In the past, people have gone through global food shortages due to pest infestations at harvest sites, resulting in crop storage.

Altogether, over 137 different pests and diseases hinder the growth and supply of crops. These pests are often in large numbers and travel in groups, resulting in more losses. It is worth noting that different pests attack different types of crops.

For instance, leaf rust, stripe dust, and aphids cause over 1% of all wheat damage worldwide. And if we look at rice, there are different culprits, such as brown plant hopper, bacterial blight, and Fusarium.

Every crop is at the risk of suffering from damage due to pests or an organic plan disease. As a result, a significant quantity of crop yield is lost to pest damage, causing food shortages worldwide.

Some pests cause more damage than others, making it important to differentiate and identify them. Apart from fields, they are also likely to be found in areas meant for food storage, such as warehouses.

Most Dangerous Plant Pests

Some notable pests are more dangerous than others, including:

The Desert Locust: They arrive in huge numbers (mostly after the rainy season) and pose a significant risk to the crops they come across.

Beetles: Every year, beetles cause billions of dollars worth of losses to farmers all over the world.

Mormon Crickets: They target all sorts of crops, including fruits, vegetables, and shrubs. Mormon crickets can last over 5-20 years, depending on the outbreak.

These pests, along with other factors, can cause damage to food crops, triggering a global food shortage.

Soaring Food Shortage throughout the World

Food shortage is one of the major problems in developing countries, where people need basic commodities and immediate access to life-saving food. Amidst the food shortage problem, numerous NGO's are looking to tackle this major problem.

According to United Nation's 2021 report, around 200 million people across 53 different countries experienced food shortages. Experts predict that this number will continue to rise worldwide, particularly due to a rise in global warming and climate change.

The global food shortage impacts the most underdeveloped countries, such as Sudan and Somalia. Moreover, certain groups, such as women and children, eat the least during a shortage. Food shortages can negatively impact other aspects of life and lead to other serious problems, including child labour, violence, and illiteracy.

Researchers and scientists have found numerous links between the world food shortage and pests. It is important to roll out solutions that eliminate these pests and overcome problems that impact the global food supply. With the rapid growth in population and rising demand, it is more important than ever to protect food crops and reserves from pests.
